AAU 110TH Inaugural Lecture : Don Advocates ICT Backed E-Voting In Nigeria

Prof. Charles Onianwa, a Pofessor of Scientific Computing has posited that Nigeria needs to genuinely embrace ICT in governance and institutionalise e-voting in future elections.
Prof. Charles Onianwa, who stated this while delivering the 110th inaugural lecture of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma entitled “Mathematics and Computer Science: Delineating The Division in The Quest For Accurate Result/ Information”, called on Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to, as a matter of urgency and deliberate policy, encourage e-voting in our electoral system.
According to Prof. Charles Onianwa, e-voting has the potentiality of generating accuracy, devoid of all the electoral hiccups that have been the bane of our electoral processes, stressing that “the ultimate aim is to produce results and information that are accurate, reliable and dependable for decision-making.”
Prof. Charles Onianwa also advocated for the establishment of interdisciplinary research initiatives, fostered by academia, industry and government alike.
While declaring the 110th in the series of Inaugural Lectures open, the University’s Acting Vice–Chancellor, Prof. Asomwan Sonnie Adagbonyin said, “Mathematics and Computer Science share a close relationship though they are distinct in their operations. While Mathematics is a science of numbers, shapes, quantities and patterns, Computer science deals with computers and computational systems, including their design, development, and application.”
Prof. Adagbonyin furthter noted that
“Algorithms, programming languages, data structures, computer architecture, and the theoretical foundations of computing are the forte of computer science, stressing that “Computer scientists are required to work on a wide range of areas, from software development and artificial intelligence to networking and cybersecurity.”
The Acting Vice-Chancellor stated that the University was “fortunate to have a seasoned Professor of Scientific Computing in the person of Professor Charles Onianwa to assiduously draw a line between Mathematics and Computer Science so we can fully receive the benefits of accuracy in result for our overall enrichment.”
He expressed his Management’s appreciation to staff and students of the University for the successfully conducted 2nd Semester Examinations of the 2022/2023 academic session and the commencement of the 2023/2024 academic session, emphasising the commitment of the University Management to an uninterrupted academic calendar and the prompt payment of salaries and pensions.
The Inaugural Lecture was the 5th in the newly introduced bi-monthly Series in the University.
