The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed receipt of a petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District. The petition, submitted by a group called Concerned Kogi Youth and Women, claims to have gathered signatures from over half of the 474,554 registered voters in the district, citing loss of confidence in the senator due to gross misconduct ยน.

However, INEC has raised concerns over the petition’s validity, citing the absence of contact information for the petitioners. The Commission requires the petitioners to provide a definite contact address, telephone numbers, and email addresses to facilitate communication.

Despite this setback, INEC reassures the public that it will adhere to the legal framework for recall, as outlined in the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024.

The recall process involves verifying the signatures in each polling unit using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). The petitioners, the senator, and accredited observers will be allowed to witness the verification process.

As the controversy unfolds, INEC urges the public to disregard speculation and insinuations on social media, ensuring that the recall process is guided by the law.
