Amidst the uncertainty surrounding the appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor for Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, two prominent socio-cultural groups from Edo Central have weighed in on the selection process. The Esan People’s Progressive Union (EPPU) and Ibhioje Progressive Union (IPU), both associations of professionals, have called on Governor Monday Okpebholo to consider the best candidate for the position, beyond tribal and political sentiments.

The groups’ concerns follow the recent selection process, which saw three candidates recommended for the position: Professors Frederick U. Igene, Marshal A. Azeke, and Sunday Olowo Samuel. While commending the diligence of the selection process, the groups expressed reservations about the suitability of two of the candidates.

The groups cited credibility issues with Professor Igene, including alleged record falsification and date of birth alteration. They questioned the suitability of a candidate with such a history for the esteemed office of Vice Chancellor.

Regarding Professor Azeke, the groups criticized his role as Deputy Vice Chancellor during the Special Intervention Team’s era, suggesting that his involvement in the team’s activities may have contributed to the university’s challenges. They wondered why he would apply for the Vice Chancellor position without resigning from the Special Intervention Team if he disagreed with its actions.

In contrast, the groups praised the tenure of Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Sunday Olowo Samuel, describing it as peaceful, rewarding, and forward-looking. They urged Governor Okpebholo to consider Samuel’s credibility and ability to lead the institution to greater heights.

The groups’ statements underscore the importance of careful consideration in the appointment process, emphasizing the need for a Vice Chancellor who can promote the university’s interests and values.
