The 22nd National Sports Festival, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, kicked off with a grand opening ceremony, officially declared open by Vice President Kashim Shettima. The event, held at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, was a colorful celebration of sports excellence and national unity.
Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, used the occasion to urge the Federal Government and states to invest more in sports development. Speaking with journalists, Enabulele emphasized that resources invested in sports are never wasted, as the sector plays a pivotal role in shaping the lives of young people and promoting national unity.
“Sports is not just about competition; it’s about celebrating our existence as a nation and our unity in diversity,” Enabulele said. “I urge governments at all levels to consciously invest more in sports, as it has a profound impact on our children’s lives and society as a whole.”
Enabulele expressed gratitude to Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo for supporting Edo State’s participation in the Ogun Games. He promised that the state’s athletes would reciprocate the governor’s gesture with spectacular performances.
Team Edo stole the show during the march-past segment, proudly sporting their traditional red and white tracksuits. The team’s impressive display was led by Enabulele, members of his board, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, and chairmen of various sports associations.
The 22nd National Sports Festival features a unique innovation – the inclusion of Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) – in addition to the traditional 36 states and the FCT participating. This year’s edition promises to be an exciting celebration of sports excellence and national unity.
