In a bid to tackle insecurity and promote peace in Edo State, Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has extended an olive branch to cult members and youths involved in violent crimes, offering them a chance to renounce their ways and turn a new leaf. The Governor made this known during a meeting with leaders of Obagie, Oke-Oroma, and Amagba communities in Benin City, where land and insecurity concerns were discussed.
Governor Okpebholo announced that his administration is willing to grant amnesty to cultists and youths in possession of illegal arms and ammunition, provided they surrender them to the authorities. A technical committee will soon be inaugurated to handle the restitution process, with a focus on skills acquisition and empowerment programs to reintegrate these individuals into society.
The Governor assured the community leaders of his administration’s commitment to bringing lasting peace to their communities, particularly as the government embarks on the development of a new city in their domain. He emphasized that peace will be restored to all restive communities in the state, including Obagie, Oke-Oroma, and Amagba.
On land matters, Governor Okpebholo revealed plans to regularize land properties in the affected areas, allowing property owners to have their lands backed in other lots. He urged property owners in the state to register their properties with the Edo Geographical Information System (GIS) to obtain land titles.
The community leaders, Pa Michael Omoruyi, Pa Abel Emokpae, and Ebo Amagba, representing Obagie, Oke-Oroma, and Amagba communities, respectively, pledged their support for the Governor’s initiatives, particularly in the development of the new city and security improvement efforts.
The Governor’s gesture comes against the backdrop of past conflicts between the state government and the communities, which resulted in loss of lives and properties. The communities commended Governor Okpebholo for setting up the Committee on Land Resolution, noting that it was the first time the state government had engaged with them since 2017.
The Committee on Land Resolution, chaired by Dr. Tony Ikpasaja, will work to address land-related issues and provide a platform for affected property owners to seek redress.
Governor Okpebholo’s initiatives signal a new chapter in Edo State’s development, with a focus on peace, security, and inclusive growth. As the state embarks on this journey, stakeholders are optimistic about the prospects for a brighter future.
