A concerned citizen and former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Chief Victor Edoror has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging the electoral body to conduct a by-election to fill the vacant Edo Central Senatorial seat. The seat has remained vacant since Senator Monday Okpebholo’s inauguration as Governor of Edo State in November 2024.

The prolonged vacancy, now extending over six months, has denied the constituents of Edo Central their right to representation in the National Assembly, as guaranteed by the Constitution. Section 76(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) mandates INEC to conduct a by-election within 30 days of a vacancy.

The former Speaker emphasized that the continued absence of a Senator from Edo Central undermines democratic governance and denies the district access to legislative deliberations, federal representation, and development opportunities. He urged INEC to initiate and expedite the by-election process, citing the need to address the growing political and developmental marginalization of the people.

The letter highlights the importance of adhering to constitutional provisions and sustaining Nigeria’s democratic institutions. The former Speaker expressed confidence in INEC’s commitment to the rule of law and equity, trusting that immediate steps would be taken to remedy the situation.

This development raises concerns about the representation and development of Edo Central, and the potential impact on the district’s interests in the National Assembly. As the matter hangs in the balance, stakeholders are eagerly awaiting INEC’s response and action.
