The Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers has welcomed a landmark ruling by the Rivers State High Court in Saakpenwa, Tai Local Government Area, aimed at resolving the prolonged leadership crisis within the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP). Justice D.G. Kio granted the traditional rulers’ request to resolve the matter out of court, giving them a two-month window to unify MOSOP’s leadership and bring lasting peace to the organization.

King Samuel Nnee, Gbenemene of Tai Kingdom and coordinator of the Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers, expressed gratitude for the court’s decision. He emphasized the importance of a united MOSOP, particularly in light of potential discussions on resuming oil production in Ogoni land. King Nnee announced plans to form a neutral reconciliation committee to engage various MOSOP factions and restore unity within the movement.

The king also criticized previous MOSOP leaders for undermining the organization’s founding spirit and global relevance. He stressed the need to revive MOSOP’s core vision, which once positioned it as a symbol of resistance and advocacy on the international stage. King Nnee regretted that MOSOP has lost out on opportunities, including the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), which the organization had fought for.

The court’s ruling and the traditional rulers’ efforts aim to revitalize MOSOP and restore its prominence in advocating for Ogoni rights and interests.
