A devastating plane crash occurred near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, western India, involving an Air India aircraft carrying 242 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, 1 Canadian national, and 7 Portuguese nationals. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, en route to London’s Gatwick Airport, went down shortly after takeoff, crashing into a residential area and triggering a massive fire.
Rescue operations are underway, with emergency response teams and local law enforcement working to evacuate those injured and recover the deceased. The crash site shows debris engulfed in flames, and thick black smoke billows into the sky. Several nearby buildings were damaged due to the impact.
At least 30-35 bodies have been recovered from the crash site, with reports suggesting the number of fatalities may rise. Over 100 casualties were feared, with many injured people being rushed to nearby hospitals.
The government has set up a high-level inquiry, and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will probe the incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed ministers to oversee relief operations, and the Civil Aviation Minister, Rammohan Naidu, is expected to visit the crash site.
Air India has set up a dedicated passenger hotline and is cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
The airline’s chairman, N. Chandrasekaran, has expressed condolences to the families of those affected and announced compensation for the kin of deceased victims.
