Benin City, Edo State – June 12, 2025 – As Nigeria marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since the return to civilian rule in 1999, author and national advocate Dr. Amen Ogbemudia has issued a passionate appeal to Nigerian leaders and youth alike, calling for a renewed commitment to selfless leadership and genuine service to the people.

In a statement released to commemorate Democracy Day, Dr. Ogbemudia reflected on the significance of June 12 as a symbol of Nigeria’s struggle for justice, equity, and accountable governance. “June 12 is not just a date in our history—it is a call to action,” she said. “A call to uphold the values of democracy through integrity, sacrifice, and people-centered leadership.”

She used the occasion to appeal directly to the nation’s top leaders, urging them to remain faithful to the promises of democracy and to prioritize the well-being of all Nigerians.

“I, Dr. Amen Ogbemudia, use this medium to appeal to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to continue to seek the route that will bring real progress, equity, and prosperity to our nation. Your leadership at this moment is critical, and I urge you to listen to the pulse of the people, especially the marginalized and the youth whose future is at stake.”

Dr. Ogbemudia also addressed the leadership of Edo State:

“To His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State, I appeal to you to lead with empathy, courage, and vision. Our state yearns for development that touches every home—healthcare, education, job creation, and security. This is a moment to stand tall in service to the people and leave a legacy that generations will remember with pride.”

She emphasized that democracy is not solely the responsibility of elected officials, but also of citizens who must participate actively and responsibly in the democratic process.

“To our vibrant Nigerian youth—this democracy is your inheritance. Protect it, engage with it, and do not give in to apathy. The hope of a new Nigeria rests in your commitment to values, action, and truth.”

Dr. Ogbemudia concluded her message by calling for a collective recommitment to the spirit of June 12—a spirit of resilience, unity, and national purpose.

“Let this Democracy Day not be marked by empty celebration, but by sincere reflection and decisive action. Together, let us build a Nigeria where democracy is not just spoken, but lived and felt in every home, every school, and every street.”
