Members of ‘Concerned Edo Citizens forum’ has appeal for the closure of schools and implementation of public health measures to combat the spread of diphtheria disease in Edo State.

A statement jointly signed by Comrade Roy Oribhabor, convener and O. I. Ibude, secretary, says, “as critical stakeholders in the Edo project, we are deeply concerned about the rapid spread of this deadly disease and its devastating impact on our citizens”.

Our research and surveys conducted in hospitals reveal a significant number of cases, with our healthcare facilities overstretched to accommodate patients. We urge Your Excellency to take radical measures to address this public health crisis. Specifically, we appeal for:

  1. Closure of schools to prevent further spread among students and staff.
  2. Restrictions on parties and large gatherings to minimize transmission.
  3. Enforcement of face mask wearing in public spaces to reduce the spread of the disease.

While we appreciate your efforts so far, we believe a more critical and comprehensive approach is necessary to fundamentally address this health challenge. A healthy society is a wealthy society, and we cannot overemphasize the importance of prioritizing public health.

The recent increase in death rates due to diphtheria is alarming, and we believe that immediate action is required to mitigate this trend. Our appeal is motivated by a strong desire for a better Edo State, reduced mortality rates, and a healthier society.

We will continue to support your policies and programs while offering constructive advice when necessary. We appreciate your leadership style and look forward to your response.
