A Race to the Bottom: JAMB’s Miserable Cut-Off Marks Undermine the Future of Education

The recent decision by JAMB to lower the cut-off mark for education degree programmes to 100 has stirred deep concern among education stakeholders across the country. At a time when our nation is striving to reposition education as the foundation of sustainable development, this decision sends a conflicting message.

The Directorate of Education Quality and Accountability (DEQA) in Edo State is steadfast in its commitment to promoting excellence and accountability in the education sector. At the heart of DEQA’s mission is the belief that the quality of teachers determines the quality of the future. Great nations are built by great teachers—individuals who are not only well-trained but are also selected from among the best minds. These educators are driven by passion and prepared through rigorous academic and ethical standards.

Led by the Director-General, Dr. Amen Ogbemudia Uhunmwangho, DEQA emphasizes the importance of attracting and retaining top talent in the teaching profession. By prioritizing the quality and training of teachers, DEQA aims to ensure that every child in Edo State receives a world-class education that prepares them for future challenges.

Lowering the cut-off mark for education degrees does not solve the challenges in the sector; it risks deepening them. Instead of making teaching more attractive, it may further discourage the best talents from pursuing it. Teaching is not a fallback career—it is a noble calling that deserves respect, prestige, and high standards.

At DEQA, we believe that to produce quality learners, we must first attract and train quality teachers. We therefore call for a national conversation—one that focuses on repositioning the teaching profession, improving teacher education, and restoring the dignity and pride of those who shape our future.

This is not just about scores or policies; it is about the soul of our nation. Our children deserve teachers who are prepared, inspired, and capable. Let us raise the standard. Let us send a message to every child that the classroom is a place of greatness, and only the great should lead it.

Together, let us build an education system that values quality over quantity and prepares our nation for a brighter tomorrow.
