… Arrest over 20 suspects in major operation
By Rosemary Okoduwa
In a bid to restore peace and security to the state, the Edo State Special Security Squad Against Cultism and Kidnapping, established by Governor Monday Okpebholo, has launched a major operation to combat cultism, kidnapping, and other social vices. The squad, comprising military, police, NSCDC, and other security agencies, conducted a series of raids in notorious hideouts across Benin City on July 15, 2025.
The operation, which marked the squad’s first major move, resulted in the arrest of over 20 suspects, with many found in possession of drugs, dangerous weapons, and other incriminating materials. The squad’s efforts are aimed at cleaning up the state and making it safe for residents and investors.
The Special Security Squad was set up in response to the recent surge in violent crimes, including kidnapping and cult-related killings, which have been plaguing the state. Governor Okpebholo’s initiative demonstrates his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Edo State, and his determination to rid the state of social vices that have been bringing it into disrepute.
Members of the squad, including John Adewale Eseikhaigbe and Eribo Emwanta, have assured the public that the operation is just the beginning of a broader effort to tackle cultism, kidnapping, and other crimes. They emphasized that the squad will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that Benin City is safe for all, and that the governor’s directive to stamp out armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, and other social vices will be fully implemented.
The Edo State Special Security Squad Against Cultism and Kidnapping is a collaborative effort between various security agencies, including the military, police, NSCDC, hunters, vigilante groups, and repentant cultists. This multi-stakeholder approach is expected to yield positive results in the fight against crime and insecurity in the state.
