In a dramatic turn of events, senior officials of the Edo State Government narrowly averted a catastrophic disaster on Sunday morning, saving hundreds of lives in the process. A collision between two heavy-duty vehicles, including a petrol tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), occurred on the outskirts of Benin City.

The tanker, which did not overturn, suffered a significant leakage, saturating the area with the pungent smell of fuel. The situation was precarious, with fears of an imminent explosion that could have claimed numerous lives. Some individuals attempted to scoop fuel from the leaking tanker, further exacerbating the danger.

Upon receiving the distress call, senior officials of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration sprang into action, mobilizing the Federal Fire Service and other critical agencies, including the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSema). Security agents quickly sealed off the area, diverting traffic to ensure public safety.

Efforts are now underway to safely transload the highly flammable product from the damaged tanker and clear the road obstruction. The rapid response and coordinated action by Governor Okpebholo’s administration have been praised as a prime example of proactive governance, effectively mitigating a potentially devastating disaster.
