The 14th Annual Scientific Conference and 10th Distinguished Lecture Series of the University of Benin’s School of Dentistry has been told that alumni play a vital role in shaping the future of their alma mater. Delivering the opening address, Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Ize-Iyamu, Dean of the School of Dentistry, urged alumni to commit to giving back to their community and institution.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu highlighted the significant contributions alumni have made to the School of Dentistry, including equipment donations, infrastructure development, and mentorship programs. She emphasized that such engagement is crucial for the institution’s growth and development.
The Dean encouraged alumni to identify landmark projects that can enhance the school’s teaching, training, and research capabilities. She noted that research plays a major role in any university and instituted prizes to encourage a culture of research among students.
The conference theme, “Oral Health in Africa: The State of Affairs, Emerging Trends, and Future Prospects,” drew attention to the need for prioritization of oral health in many African countries. Prof. Christopher Okunseri, a distinguished alumnus, highlighted the challenges faced by many countries in the region and the importance of promoting oral health awareness.
The School of Dentistry’s recent free oral health outreach and treatment program at the Faculty of Law was cited as an example of giving back to the community. The event was made possible through the efforts of volunteers, donors, and sponsors.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu announced the institution of prizes for research, diligence, and specialty in the annual scientific conference. The prizes aim to encourage students to develop a culture of research and innovation.
The conference brought together dignitaries, including the Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Edoba Omoregie (SAN), and the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Chief Bisi Idaomi. Their presence underscored the importance of the event and the commitment to excellence in education and healthcare.
