Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work on the ongoing Benin-Sapele road project, despite financial mobilization to contractors. In response, the Governor has summoned contractors handling the section funded by the Edo State Government to provide explanations for the delay or face severe sanctions.
Governor Okpebholo conducted an inspection of the over 20km stretch of road on Sunday evening, stopping at key points to assess the quality of drainage, pavement, and materials used. While acknowledging the solid and good work done, he emphasized that the slow pace of construction is unacceptable and causing undue suffering for road users.
The Governor also raised concerns about the drainage system design, noting that it stops at the middle of the town, which could exacerbate flooding. To mitigate this, his administration plans to review and adjust the design to ensure proper water drainage and desilting.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the road project, which is crucial for reviving economic activities in the area. The second segment of the road, spanning 7km, is expected to commence soon.
The Benin-Sapele-Warri road project has faced challenges, including the termination of a contract with Levant Construction Ltd by the Federal Government due to non-performance. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, cited persistent delays and abandonment of the project site despite warnings and notices. This development underscores the need for efficient project management and timely completion.
Governor Okpebholo’s decisive action aims to ensure the project’s timely completion and alleviate the plight of road users. By addressing drainage concerns and committing to quality infrastructure, his administration seeks to create a lasting solution for the people of Edo State.
