A bereaved couple Mr. Jerry Sylvester and Mrs. Edwina Ezuruike Jerry is mourning the death of their nine-day-old twin babies at a private hospital in Edo State, sparking a police investigation into the tragic incident. The babies, born preterm on July 9, 2025, were referred to Med-Vical Medical Centre in Benin City for paediatric and neonatal intensive care but unfortunately passed away on July 18 and August 2, 2025.

The parents claimed they had already paid ₦4.4 million in medical bills before the second baby’s death. However, when Mrs. Jerry arrived at the hospital, she was shocked to find her child’s remains wrapped in a carton with hands and legs tied, and a heavy bandage on the head with blood seeping through.

The hospital allegedly demanded an additional ₦2.7 million before allowing the parents to see the corpse, and later moved the body to a mortuary without their consent.

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the investigation, with the Commissioner of Police ordering an autopsy on one of the babies yet to be buried. The police spokesman, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, assured that detectives have commenced inquiries.

When contacted, officials of Med-Vical Medical Centre declined to comment on the matter. However, a representative threatened legal action, claiming the matter is already in court and warning of ₦10 million damages.

The bereaved parents are seeking justice and answers, demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding their babies’ deaths. As the investigation unfolds, many are watching closely, hoping for transparency and accountability.

The incident has raised concerns about medical care and accountability in private hospitals, highlighting the need for stringent regulations and oversight. The outcome of the investigation will likely have far-reaching implications for the hospital and the healthcare sector.
