‎…Commends Turnout of Voters

By Katherine Abayomi

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State will come to an end on September 18, 2025, paving the way for Governor Siminalayi Fubara to return to office.

Wike made this assertion after casting his vote in Rumuepirikom Ward 9 Unit in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State. He described the election as peaceful and successful. He commended the large turnout of voters and noted that the election marked a significant step towards restoring normalcy in the state.

According to Wike, with the local government elections concluded and representatives in place, the conditions are now right for the state of emergency to be lifted. He stated, “By September 18, the state of emergency will expire, the assembly will return to their duties, and we will have government at the grassroots level.”

Wike also praised the conduct of the elections, saying, “I am very happy. It means that people identify with the elections. You have not heard of any violence. You have not heard of people carrying ballot boxes. You see that the electoral materials are there. People are there casting their votes. As far as we are concerned, the elections are very peaceful.”

The local government elections were conducted six months after the Supreme Court nullified a previous election due to breaches of state electoral laws. President Bola Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State in March, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the State Assembly.
