The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has strongly condemned the planned bye-elections into local government councils, describing the move as “illegal, unconstitutional, and a blatant disregard of a subsisting court order.” The party argues that the electoral body behind the planned exercise is unknown to law and lacks the authority to conduct such elections.

The party notes that Edo State already has duly elected councillors serving in the 192 wards across the state, whose tenure lawfully expires in September 2026. According to the PDP, the planned bye-elections are an attempt to truncate the democratic mandate of these councillors and undermine the will of the people.

The PDP accuses the Edo State Government of running the state in open breach of the law, contempt of judicial pronouncements, and disregard for democratic norms. The party views the planned bye-elections as a “civilian coup” against the people of Edo State, aimed at seizing control of the councils by any means necessary.

The Edo PDP has rejected and condemned the planned bye-elections in their entirety. The party calls on the government to respect the rule of law, retrace its steps, and desist from plunging Edo into avoidable political crisis. The PDP emphasizes the need to defend democracy and protect the people’s mandate.

In conclusion, the Edo PDP has made it clear that it will not stand idly by while the government undermines the democratic process in the state. The party’s strong condemnation of the planned bye-elections is a call to action for all well-meaning citizens of Edo State to join in rejecting this illegality and defending democracy.
