The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, has offered royal blessings to the newly appointed Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Enibokun Ize-Iyamu, charging her to deliver transformative healthcare services.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu, who assumed duty on August 18, 2025, led the UBTH management team to the Palace on Thursday to formally present her appointment to the revered Benin throne and seek royal support.
In his remarks, Oba Ewuare II congratulated the CMD, describing her appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a clear case of “a round peg in a round hole.” He lauded her professional track record and expressed confidence that she would excel in her new role.
“You are a professional. Congratulations, madam. It is befitting that you are the Chief Medical Director of UBTH. We are happy that you were chosen, and we know you will do your best to make UBTH a success. Be assured that you have our full support,” the monarch said.
The Benin Monarch also commended President Tinubu for prioritizing merit in the appointment and acknowledged the role of Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, in supporting healthcare leadership in the state.
Notably, Oba Ewuare II praised the milestone of having UBTH’s first female CMD, emphasizing that her appointment reflects gender inclusion and recognition of competence.
In her address to the Benin throne, Prof. Ize-Iyamu highlighted her transformative mission statement towards strengthening healthcare and improving medical services at UBTH. She sought royal blessings to strengthen her in discharging her duties, emphasizing her commitment to excellence and innovation in medical services. Her vision for UBTH is encapsulated in the acronym “UBTH CARES”, which stands for Care, Advancement, Revitalisation, Employee welfare, and Sustainability.
