Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on members of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists to leverage technology and innovation to advance development in the health sector. The governor made this call at the 19th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the association, themed “Embracing Technology and Innovations in Orthodontics: Pioneering the Future,” held in Benin City.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, Okpebholo commended the association for its consistency and commitment to improving oral health nationwide.

“Orthodontics is not only about aligning teeth. It is about restoring confidence, improving speech, nutrition, and overall well-being. You make people smile with dignity, and that is priceless,” the governor said.

He stressed that artificial intelligence and other technological tools are transforming orthodontic care globally, urging practitioners in Nigeria to ensure innovations are accessible, affordable, and safe for all.

“For us in Nigeria, the challenge is to prevent these innovations from being out of reach for the majority. We must embrace technology in ways that improve access and affordability,” he added.

Earlier, NAO President, Dr. Olayinka Adeyinka, underscored the critical role orthodontists play in correcting malocclusions and rehabilitating patients with cleft lip and palate.

“Many of these patients are from low-income families, and orthodontists help ease their burden through timely interventions and expertise,” Adeyinka noted.

He also congratulated the incoming President of NAO, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, wishing her a successful tenure as she assumes leadership of the association.
