The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Ize-Iyamu, has emerged as the 10th National President of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists (NAO).

Prof. Ize-Iyamu, who until now was the Vice President of the association, was inaugurated on Friday during a ceremony graced by top dignitaries, including Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Edo State Deputy Governor, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, former Edo State Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Odubu, and her husband, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

In her acceptance speech, the new president expressed deep gratitude to members for entrusting her with the responsibility of steering the association for the next three years.

“I am deeply humbled and grateful to stand before you today as the 10th President of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists. I thank you for the trust and confidence you have placed in me to lead this noble profession,” she said.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu pledged to champion initiatives that will enhance members’ professional skills, promote best practices, and improve orthodontic care delivery across Nigeria. She also highlighted the urgent need to address the shortage of orthodontic professionals in the country, noting that NAO currently has only 74 members serving a population of over 237 million people.

“Our association has a rich history of promoting excellence in orthodontic care, education, and research. As president, I commit to building on this legacy, fostering innovation, and exploring new frontiers in orthodontics. My leadership will be guided by inclusivity, transparency, and accountability,” she added.

She called on members to join hands with her administration to advance the profession and expand access to orthodontic services, especially in underserved areas.

The immediate past president, Dr. Olayinka Adeyinka, in her remarks, expressed confidence in Prof. Ize-Iyamu’s ability to lead the association to greater heights.

The event also had in attendance senior UBTH management staff, including DCMAC Dr. Fidelis Eki-Udoko, Acting Director of Administration Mrs. Joy Oyakhilome, and the hospital’s PRO, Barr. Joshua Uwaila, among others.
