Beyond Accents: Why LGA Need Leaders who Understands Local Needs

Local government is the closest arm of government to the people, and it is therefore essential that anyone aspiring to be a council chairman is deeply rooted in the local government area they wish to represent.

Such a leader must know the nooks and crannies of the communities, understand the villages within the locality, and be able to communicate effectively with the people in the language they best understand.

As the local government elections in Edo State gathers momentum, i urge all Uromians to unite behind a candidate who knows our challenges , speaks our language and has the vision to take us to the next level.

Campaigns in the grassroots should not be dominated by ‘Queen’s English’. In fact, 80% of political campaigns at the local government level should be conducted in the local language. It is neither a measure of intelligence nor leadership capacity to speak polished English when addressing villagers-it is, instead a disconnect from the realities of the people.

As we search for who will lead us at the local level, what we need is not a distant politician flaunting fine English, but a grassroots leader who lives among the people, understands their daily struggles and genuinely shares in their pain.
