The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. (Mrs) Idia Ize-Iyamu, has embarked on an inspection of ongoing projects in the hospital to drive infrastructure development and improve service delivery.
The projects inspected include the new National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) building complex and the ultramodern UBTH staff lounge. The CMD noted that these projects aim to enhance healthcare services, reduce workload, and provide a comfortable environment for staff and patients.
At the core of this transformation is the remodeled NHIS facility, designed to serve only UBTH staff members, thereby reducing the heavy workload previously borne by the General Practice Clinic (GPC), which had long catered to hundreds of patients daily.
According to Prof. Ize-Iyamu, the intervention is intended to bring lasting relief to patients who have endured long waiting hours at the GPC for decades.
During the inspection, the CMD emphasized that the projects reflect her administration’s commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian has access to quality healthcare services at UBTH.

At the nearly completed Staff Lounge Centre, she explained that the facility is designed to provide a comfortable and casual space for relaxation and social interaction among staff. The new lounge also accommodates the UBTH Crèche and playground — a novel initiative of the current administration.
The Crèche, she noted, will cater to both staff and non-staff nursing mothers within the hospital community, marking a major milestone following the abandonment and eventual closure of the previous facility by past administrations.
A highlight of the inspection was a stopover at the GPC Clinic, where the CMD observed patient congestion and long waiting times. She directed staff to prioritize prompt medical attention to ensure improved patient care and satisfaction.
