The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has kicked off its commemoration of the 2025 World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day, a global event observed annually on October 25th. The hospital’s leadership, under the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. (Mrs) Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, has initiated a series of events to raise awareness and support for individuals and families affected by these conditions.

On Friday, October 24th, 2025, the hospital organized an informative session at the Antenatal Clinic, where expectant mothers received valuable insights into the causes, prevention strategies, and available treatments for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. The session was expertly facilitated by UBTH’s Deputy Director of Nursing Services (DDNS), Omoruyi.

Explaining further, health experts noted that Spina Bifida is a congenital defect that occurs when the spinal column fails to close completely during pregnancy, leading to varying degrees of physical and neurological complications.

Commending the Nursing Department for its proactive initiative, the CMD, Prof. Ize-Iyamu, emphasized that awareness creation, early antenatal registration, and proper nutrition play crucial roles in reducing preventable birth defects and promoting safer motherhood.

She reaffirmed her administration’s dedication to providing quality healthcare, early intervention, and continuous support for individuals and families affected by these conditions.

Through such targeted awareness and compassionate care, UBTH continues to strengthen its leadership in maternal and child health advocacy, driving home the message that informed mothers make healthier families and safer communities.
