Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Friday led a formidable coalition of All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in a historic show of unity, formally endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027.
The high-powered endorsement rally, held in Edo Central Senatorial District, drew an impressive lineup of political heavyweights including Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa; former Edo Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole; Minister of Regional Development, Hon. Abubakar Momoh and APC State Chairman, Emperor Jarret Tenebe.
Also in attendance were the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, former Deputy Governor, Chief Pius Odubu, Senator Mathew Urhoghide, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and Retired General Cecil Esekhaigbe, leader of the party in Edo Central.
The event was marked by the formal reception of prominent decampees from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) into the APC a major boost that signals a new wave of momentum for the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to a jubilant crowd, Governor Okpebholo expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for his commitment to Edo’s development, particularly in the area of infrastructure.
“I want to thank Mr. President for what he’s doing for Edo people,” Okpebholo said. “When I went to Abuja to discuss our road challenges, the Minister of Works personally came to inspect them. Today, the Agbor Road project and several others have been approved. In a few weeks, you’ll see caterpillars on site. The President doesn’t need to come here to campaign we’ve already done that for him.”
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Edo, pledging to remain connected to his roots even after his tenure.
“I will never be disconnected from the people who made me,” he said. “Service to the people remains my priority both now and after my time in office.”
Senator Oshiomhole, in his remarks, commended both President Tinubu and Governor Okpebholo for their leadership and fiscal discipline.
“One thing this governor keeps reminding us is that he is not borrowing to fund projects,” Oshiomhole noted. “If the President had not created a transparent financial environment, many of these ideas would have died in his head. When you have a good driver, you don’t change him. Constant change can crash the vehicle.”
Minister Abubakar Momoh also praised the Tinubu administration for introducing what he described as the most far-reaching reforms in Nigeria’s history.
“No government since independence has embarked on reforms as impactful as those of President Tinubu,” Momoh said. “These reforms are laying a solid foundation for sustainable national growth.”
The highlight of the event came when Retired General Cecil Esekhaigbe moved the motion for the formal adoption of President Tinubu as the APC’s preferred presidential candidate for 2027. The motion was seconded by Hon. Joe Ikpea, Senator representing Edo Central, and unanimously endorsed by Senator Oshiomhole and other party leaders.
To further strengthen grassroots mobilization, four campaign buses were presented through the Office of the Special Adviser on Youths to coordinators from Edo North, Edo Central, and Edo South.
The ceremony also saw a major political realignment as key PDP and LP figures Hon. Emmanuel Okoduwa, Hon. Patrick Iluobe, Mr. Ehime Edangbe, and Hon. Anthony Iselobho formally joined the APC, pledging total loyalty to the party and commitment to President Tinubu’s re-election.
With Friday’s grand endorsement, Governor Okpebholo has effectively united the Edo APC behind a common purpose reaffirming the state’s support for President Tinubu and energizing the party’s base ahead of the next general elections.
