The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Uromi Branch, has announced the commencement of a new directive in line with the Legal Practitioners’ Remuneration (For Legal Documentation and Other Land Matters) Order, 2023.

According to a public notice issued and signed by B.S.E. Ohiorenoya, Esq., Chairman of the Remuneration Committee, on behalf of the branch, the directive mandates that a 10% professional fee be charged on all land documentation and related transactions within its jurisdiction, a practice consistent with what is obtainable across all states of the federation.

The statement outlines the step-by-step process for land documentation through legal practitioners as follows:-

  1. Client Information and Investigation: The client is required to provide all relevant personal and property information to the lawyer, who will in turn conduct the necessary investigations.
  2. Payment of Professional Fee: The client shall pay 10% of the purchase sum into the designated bank account of the NBA, Uromi Branch, which will be provided by the lawyer handling the transaction.
  3. Document Preparation: Upon confirmation of payment, the lawyer will prepare the relevant legal document such as a Deed of Conveyance, Deed of Transfer, or Deed of Assignment.
  4. NBA Stamping:The lawyer will then present the prepared document, along with the client’s payment receipt, to the NBA Uromi Branch Secretariat for official stamping and verification.
  5. Delivery to Client: After stamping, the lawyer will make copies of the verified document and deliver them to the client for record and legal use.

The NBA Uromi Branch stated that this directive will take effect from November 1, 2025, urging the general public and all stakeholders in land transactions to comply accordingly.
