The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining and expanding the Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises in the Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) project, an initiative designed to strengthen agribusiness development and improve rural livelihoods across the Niger Delta region.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Jerry Uwangue, gave the assurance on Wednesday in Benin City during the wrap-up of the 5th Joint Supervision Mission of the Federal Government, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) LIFE-ND Project.
Describing the eight-day mission as another milestone in the project’s implementation, Uwangue said the collaboration continues to drive youth empowerment, food systems transformation, and economic growth in rural communities. He noted that Edo State is fully aligned with the proposed LIFE-ND Plus Initiative, which seeks to consolidate gains and extend project benefits to more beneficiaries.
“Agriculture remains central to our economic diversification agenda,” the commissioner said.
“We are committed to strengthening food systems, promoting value addition, and creating market opportunities for farmers and agribusinesses.”
Representing IFAD Country Director, Mrs. Dede Ekoue, the Country Programme Analyst, Dr. Ogunniyi Adebayo, described LIFE-ND as “a movement of hope, resilience, and transformation for young Nigerians.” He praised the innovation shown by project beneficiaries, adding that the initiative continues to unlock the potential of youths and women in the region.
“From our field visits, LIFE-ND stands as a living testimony of how targeted investments in youth and women can transform communities,” Adebayo said.
“IFAD remains committed to scaling this success through additional financing.”
Also speaking, the National Project Coordinator of LIFE-ND, Dr. Abiodun Sanni, said the supervision mission offered an important opportunity to review progress, share lessons, and strengthen sustainability strategies.
“The LIFE-ND project has proven to be a model of partnership empowering youths and women, building viable agribusinesses, and promoting inclusive rural transformation,” Sanni stated. He added that improving access to finance and climate resilience would be key focus areas in the next phase.
In his closing remarks, the Edo State Project Coordinator, Mr. John Omoruyi, expressed appreciation to the Mission Team for their professionalism and insightful feedback. He said the recommendations provided would significantly enhance project delivery and long-term sustainability.
“Your guidance will enhance our implementation strategies and overall impact,” he said, reaffirming Edo State’s commitment to implementing agreed action points with renewed dedication and accountability.
