The Edo State Police Command has arrested a social media content creator popularly known as “Madam Oil Rice” for circulating a fabricated story claiming she was kidnapped along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City and later extorted by Police operatives at Akpata Police Station.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Moses Joe Yamu, and made available to journalists in Benin.
According to the PPRO, the Command immediately launched an investigation after the viral video emerged, only to discover that the entire narrative was deliberately manufactured.
“During interrogation, the 24-year-old suspect, Osarobo Omoyemen, confessed that she staged the incident solely to create online content and attract followers to her TikTok page,” Yamu said. He added that investigators also found that she had deleted an earlier video in which an accomplice could be heard urging viewers to follow her page, exposing the intent behind the false alarm.
CSP Yamu described the act as not only misleading but capable of inciting hostility against the Police and triggering unnecessary tension within the state.
He confirmed that the suspect was arrested and charged to court on Thursday, 20th November 2025, while efforts are underway to apprehend her collaborators so they too can face prosecution. He emphasized that the Command’s action is meant to serve as a deterrent to individuals who use social media irresponsibly to create panic or disrupt public peace.
Reaffirming the Police Command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security across Edo State, Yamu warned against the creation and dissemination of false or inciting content.
“Members of the public are advised to verify information before sharing and to refrain from acts that may mislead the public or undermine the efforts of security agencies,” he cautioned.
