Traders, business owners, and residents along the Sapele Road axis in Benin City have commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for the ongoing reconstruction of the long-neglected Benin–Sapele Road, describing the intervention as a major relief after years of hardship.
According to a statement signed by Patrick Akhere Ebojele, PhD, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, residents said the deplorable condition of the road had for years disrupted daily activities, slowed commercial transactions, and discouraged customers from accessing businesses in the area.
Speaking on the impact of the road repairs, a transporter, Mr. Amadi Great, expressed deep gratitude to the governor, noting that some sections of the road were previously completely inaccessible.
“I can’t thank the governor enough. This very spot was impossible to reach before now. Even the former governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki once got stuck here and said it was a federal road. Today, we thank God that Governor Okpebholo has fixed it for us,” he said.
A second-hand clothing trader, Mrs. Rosemary Obazee, also described the reconstruction as a turning point for businesses along the axis. We are very happy now. Before, customers found it difficult to come here because of the bad road. Now vehicles move freely, and transporting goods is no longer a problem. Sales have improved,” she said, while appealing to the government to ensure that contractors complete the remaining sections promptly, especially with the rainy season approaching.
Similarly, a battery and car accessories dealer, Mr. Richard Erahbor, recalled how the area used to become completely cut off whenever it rained.
“This place used to be flooded and impassable. Now the road is motorable. We can truly say this government has kept its promise. Business is better because people can now move freely,” he stated.
A vulcanizer, Mr. Osaro Nosa, added that the improved road has led to an increase in customer traffic and daily income for traders operating along the route.
Residents further praised the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, and Governor Okpebholo for personally inspecting the project to ensure quality execution and prudent use of public funds.
The statement noted that while several failed portions of the road have already been rehabilitated, work is ongoing on other sections. From Ring Road through Sapele Road to the bypass, the improved roadway has significantly eased traffic congestion, boosted commercial activities, and restored confidence among residents and business owners along the corridor.
