The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Edo State Branch, has dismissed recent social media allegations targeting the clinical and administrative operations of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), describing the claims as unverified and misleading.
In a statement issued in Benin City and signed by the Edo NMA Chairman, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, the association urged the public to disregard what it termed “unverified and disruptive allegations,” particularly claims suggesting mismanagement and the improper engagement of a private laboratory within the hospital.
The NMA noted that since assuming office about six months ago, the Chief Medical Director, Idia Ize-Iyamu, has prioritised uninterrupted, quality healthcare delivery. The association explained that the dual-track laboratory model in operation at UBTH guarantees 24-hour testing, even during equipment downtime or supply delays. It further stated that the arrangement strengthens internal quality control through cross-checks and mirrors systems already approved in several federal hospitals nationwide.
According to the association, the approach does not contravene directives of the Federal Ministry of Health but aligns with national policies encouraging public-private collaboration where it enhances service continuity and efficiency.
Dr. Oseghale emphasised that laboratory turnaround time remains a critical factor in emergency care. He explained that having two accredited facilities on site helps reduce delays, improve diagnostic accuracy, and allow clinicians to focus more on patient treatment rather than logistics.
Reaffirming its position, the Edo NMA recognised Prof. Ize-Iyamu’s commitment to transparent leadership and strengthening UBTH’s service delivery. The association stated that it would continue to monitor hospital practices while engaging constructively with management, staff, and the wider community in the interest of safeguarding the health and well-being of Edo residents.
“It is worth restating that quality healthcare thrives on facts, not rumours, emotions, or politics,” Dr. Oseghale added, reaffirming the association’s support for UBTH’s management and staff in delivering reliable and continuous medical services.
