Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has condemned the recent attack on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the incident as a regrettable development that appears to have stemmed from internal party disagreements taken too far.
In a statement personally issued on Tuesday night, the governor expressed sympathy with the affected members of the party and their families, noting that violence of any kind has no place in Edo State’s political culture.
“As peace-loving people, the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of party politics remains totally condemned and will not be tolerated going forward,” he stated.
Governor Okpebholo stressed that, as Chief Security Officer of the state, he would not stand by and allow Edo to be turned into a theatre of conflict in the name of political rivalry. He observed that while the full motive behind the attack may not yet be clear, such incidents risk tarnishing the hard earned reputation of Edo as one of the most peaceful states in the country.
He maintained that no amount of political blackmail would distract his administration or weaken the resolve of the people, emphasizing that governance should be anchored on performance, constructive engagement, and earning the trust and confidence of citizens.
“This is what we are known for, and we will remain committed to that path,” the governor affirmed.
He further noted that when individuals resort to violence in pursuit of political advantage, it reflects a breakdown of internal mechanisms for resolving differences. According to him, healthy opposition is welcome in any democracy, but it must be conducted within the bounds of the law and mutual respect.
While condemning the attack and sympathizing with ADC members, the governor advised the party to carefully address its internal issues and avoid directing accusations beyond its fold without clear evidence.
He appealed to residents of Edo State to remain calm and law-abiding, urging them not to allow isolated incidents to create fear or distort the image of the state.
“Edo remains a peaceful state, and no one can take that away from us,” he assured.
Governor Okpebholo also called on the police and other security agencies to remain vigilant and closely monitor political activities that could potentially escalate into unrest, reiterating his administration’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
