Edo Govt to the Rescue: Newborn Saved, Special Mom Gets Care

The Edo State Government has rescued a newborn baby boy in Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, following reports that a mentally challenged woman gave birth within the community.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, led the swift intervention as part of the state’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding vulnerable citizens. Speaking during her visit to the Local Government Council Secretariat, she reaffirmed that the protection of women, children, the elderly, and other at-risk groups remains a top priority of the present administration.

Mrs. Abdallah emphasized that the government remains proactive and responsive, particularly in cases involving children who require urgent protection and structured care. She disclosed that the newborn would be placed in a secure and nurturing environment where he will receive appropriate medical attention, proper nutrition, and developmental support to ensure a healthy start to life.

The Commissioner further assured that efforts are underway to locate the mother, who is currently roaming, and facilitate her admission into a rehabilitation facility. According to her, the mother will receive comprehensive care, counseling, and medical treatment aimed at stabilizing her condition and supporting her eventual reintegration into society.

She commended the leadership of the local government and the management of Central Hospital, Ubiaja for their prompt response in providing immediate medical care to the baby and preventing further complications.

In his remarks, the Head of Local Government Administration, Mr. Ernest Oyakhilome Erebholo, expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for her decisive action. He praised her dedication and proactive leadership in protecting the rights and wellbeing of vulnerable citizens across the state, while pledging sustained collaboration with the Ministry.

The engagement culminated in the formal handover of the baby to the Commissioner, who ensured the newborn’s safe relocation from the hospital to a children’s home, where he will receive the care, protection, and supervision necessary for his wellbeing.
