The Edo State Education Quality Assurance and Accountability (DEQA) has condemned in strong terms the recent viral video showing students allegedly bullying a fellow student at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City, describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable in any learning environment.

The Director General of DEQA, Dr Amen Ogbemudia, made the condemnation known in a statement she personally signed and made available to newsmen.

According to her, DEQA views the incident as a serious violation of the principles of safety, discipline, and respect that schools are expected to uphold.

Dr. Ogbemudia stated that as the Director General of DEQA, she would ensure that a proper and thorough investigation is carried out to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and to guarantee that justice is served.

Dr. Amen Ogbemudia further noted that it was unfortunate to witness such behaviour among students at a time when the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo is making concerted efforts to reposition Edo State in the area of quality education, stressing that acts of bullying and violence run contrary to the government’s commitment to promoting discipline, safety, and excellence within the state’s educational system.

The DEQA boss further emphasized that educational institutions must remain safe spaces where students can learn and develop without fear of harassment or abuse.
While calling for calm among members of the public, Dr. Ogbemudia reassured that DEQA would stand its ground to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents from recurring in schools across the state.

She also urged parents and guardians to play active roles in guiding the upbringing of their children by instilling values of discipline, empathy, and respect for others.
In addition, she called on teachers and school administrators to remain vigilant and closely monitor the activities of students under their care, noting that schools have a duty of responsibility to safeguard the well-being of every child entrusted to them.

Dr. Ogbemudia reaffirmed DEQA’s commitment to maintaining high standards in the education system and ensuring that schools across the state operate in environments that promote safety, respect, and quality learning.
