The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) recorded an impressive turnout on Tuesday as over 100 patients accessed care under its ongoing 50% discount on selected dental treatments.

The initiative forms part of activities marking the World Oral Health Day 2026, themed “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life,” organised by the Nigerian Dental Association in collaboration with UBTH.

Speaking during the exercise, the Coordinator of the UBTH Dental Centre, Nneka Chumwumah, expressed satisfaction with the large turnout since the programme began. She noted that the initiative is designed to improve oral health within the community by making dental services more affordable and accessible.

According to her, more than 100 patients have already benefited from a range of dental procedures offered at reduced cost. She also commended the hospital management for prioritising oral health through the intervention.

Some beneficiaries, who spoke anonymously, expressed appreciation to the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Idia Ize-Iyamu, for the initiative. They noted that the discount has eased the financial burden of dental care, enabling more people to access essential services.

It will be recalled that Prof. Ize-Iyamu officially launched the programme on Monday, announcing a 50% discount on key dental procedures. The offer runs from March 16 to 19 at the UBTH Dental Centre and covers services such as scaling and polishing, tooth extractions, GIC restorations, and radiographs.
