The Edo State Government has commended women for their outstanding contributions to political and legislative development, noting that their increasing participation continues to shape governance, influence policy direction, and strengthen democratic institutions across the state.

This commendation was delivered by the Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, at the maiden edition of the Convergence of Women in Leadership and Impact Awards (COWLIA 0.1), organized by the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV), Edo State Chapter. In her goodwill message, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, underscored the pivotal role of women in nation building. Mrs. Abdallah stressed that women’s empowerment must go beyond rhetoric and be reflected in deliberate policies, inclusive governance frameworks, and equitable access to education, economic resources, and leadership opportunities.

“True progress can only be achieved when women are fully empowered, given equal opportunities, and actively included in decision making processes at all levels. Political participation is not just a right but a vital pathway for women to influence policies, advocate for justice, and drive sustainable development,” she stated.

She further called on government institutions, civil society organizations, and community leaders to intensify efforts toward promoting gender equality and nurturing women’s leadership development.

“As we mark this occasion, let us renew our commitment to breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and building an inclusive society where women’s voices are heard, valued, and respected. Empowering women is not only a moral obligation but a strategic imperative for growth, peace, and prosperity,” she added.

The Commissioner also encouraged women to step forward with confidence and seize opportunities in politics and governance, emphasizing that their perspectives are indispensable for effective and balanced leadership.

In her remarks, the Founder of NILOWV, Rt. Hon. Dame Esther Uduehi, represented by former Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, SAN described the gathering as purposeful and visionary, reflecting strong coordination and commitment to advancing women’s leadership.
