The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has joined the global community in commemorating World Autism Awareness Day 2026, reaffirming its commitment to promoting inclusion, understanding, and support for persons living with autism.
In a statement issued on April 2, the Ministry described autism as a lifelong developmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and how individuals experience the world. It emphasized that despite these differences, persons on the autism spectrum deserve equal opportunities, dignity, acceptance, and the necessary support to lead fulfilling lives.
The Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, called for the collective effort of families, educators, caregivers, and the wider public in building a more inclusive society. She stressed that individuals with autism should not be stigmatized or marginalized, but rather embraced and empowered to reach their full potential.
According to the Commissioner, fostering patience, understanding, and compassion remains key to improving the quality of life for persons living with autism. She further highlighted the need for increased awareness and deliberate actions to eliminate discrimination in all forms.
Hon. Abdallah commended the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his continued dedication to the welfare and protection of vulnerable groups. She equally praised the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, for her sustained advocacy and impactful initiatives supporting women, children, and persons with special needs, including those living with autism.
Reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment, the Commissioner noted that efforts would continue to focus on promoting early diagnosis, improving access to quality education and healthcare services, and strengthening policies that encourage social inclusion.
She urged stakeholders across both public and private sectors to intensify collaboration in raising awareness, creating enabling environments, and ensuring that individuals with autism are given opportunities to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
The Ministry called on residents of Edo State to embrace diversity and support ongoing advocacy efforts, noting that every individual, regardless of their condition, has unique abilities and valuable contributions to offer.
