Again, Court Of Appeal Affirms Reinstatement Of Shaibu As Edo Deputy Governor

… dismiss Edo Assembly suit

By Rosemary Okoduwa

The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division has dismissed an appeal brought before it by the Edo State House of Assembly in the impeachment case against the reinstated deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu.

This ruling follows a previous judgment by Justice James Omotosho, which also ordered Shaibu’s reinstatement and the restoration of his security and salaries from the date of his impeachment on April 8, 2024.

The Edo State House of Assembly had appealed the judgment by Justice J.K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja which based it’s decision on the fact the Assembly did not follow proper procedures.

The Assembly claimed Shaibu was impeached based on allegations of perjury and leaking government secrets and that he refused to appear before the investigative panel.

It also argued that it followed constitutional requirements for impeachment, with 18 out of 19 members present voting to impeach Shaibu, while one abstained.

However, the Court of Appeal dismissed the Assembly’s appeal, ruling that Shaibu remains the legitimate Deputy Governor of Edo State.

The reinstated Deputy Governor thanked Edo people in particular and Nigerians in general for their prayers and support. He described the victory as victory for democracy and reaffirm judiciary as hope of the common man.
