In a groundbreaking moment for the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the 267th Pope, marking a significant milestone as the first American to assume the papacy.

Born in Chicago on September 14, 1955, Prevost brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to the role, having spent much of his life abroad, particularly in Peru and Rome.

Prevost’s journey to the papacy began with his ordination as an Augustinian priest in 1982. He served as a missionary in Peru for over two decades, becoming a naturalized citizen and developing fluency in Spanish, Italian, and English. His dedication to the church was evident from a young age, with a childhood friend recalling his clear sense of purpose as a teenager.

Prevost’s career advanced significantly when he was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America in 2023. This role oversaw the vetting of nominations from bishops around the world, showcasing his expertise in church governance. He was also elevated to cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023, further solidifying his position within the church hierarchy.

Upon his election, Prevost took the papal name of Leo XIV. As the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, he is expected to engage effectively with global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, despite potential differences on issues like immigration. Prevost’s diplomatic skills and experience working with diverse communities will likely serve him well in navigating complex global issues .

U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Prevost, expressing his eagerness to meet the new Pope. Catholic Agency for Overseas Development’s director, Christine Allen, welcomed Prevost’s appointment, highlighting his potential to provide moral guidance and address global challenges.
