The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has a new Chief Medical Director, Professor Idia Ize-Iyamu, who was formally inaugurated into office today, Monday, August 18, 2025. With her appointment, Prof. Ize-Iyamu becomes the first female CMD, first dentist, and first orthodontist to hold the position in the hospital’s 52-year history.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu expressed her dedication to excellence and commitment to supporting the national drive for equitable, cost-effective, and reliable healthcare for all Nigerians. She pledged to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve staff welfare, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” Agenda to reposition the health sector.
“I am profoundly grateful to the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the confidence reposed in me through this appointment, she said.”
Prof. Ize-Iyamu emphasized the importance of putting patients first, ensuring shorter waiting times, safer surgeries, and kinder wards. She promised to renew the hospital’s infrastructure, focusing on clean water, reliable power, and resilient emergency services. The new CMD highlighted the need for relentless research and nurturing future healthcare leaders, she went further to say that UBTH will partner with the Federal Government, Edo State government, University of Benin, professional bodies, philanthropists, alumni, and industry counterparts to drive progress.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu acknowledged that UBTH’s success relies on its people, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, administrators, cleaners, students, and patients. She assured staff of improved welfare under her leadership and called for cooperation and support to drive the hospital’s progress.
As the first woman to serve as CMD of UBTH, Prof. Ize-Iyamu stands as an example of what is possible when merit meets opportunity. Her appointment serves as a message to every girl child in Nigeria that there are no ceilings too high, no doors too heavy, and no dreams too distant when striving to excel
