Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has paid the medical bills of an Ekpoma based couple currently receiving treatment at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, including a pregnant woman who was safely delivered of a baby through a cesarean section.

According to a press statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Patrick Akhere Ebojele, the governor made the humanitarian intervention during a visit to the hospital, where he also settled the medical bills of several other patients admitted in different wards.

The statement explained that the pregnant woman had initially approached the governor seeking financial assistance for her husband, who was receiving treatment for severe fire burns sustained in Ekpoma.

However, the situation quickly took a new turn when members of the governor’s medical team observed that the woman was due for delivery and immediately arranged for her to be taken to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

Doctors at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital later carried out a cesarean section, which resulted in the safe delivery of a baby.

Governor Okpebholo said the woman had come to seek help for her husband because the family could no longer afford the rising cost of medical treatment.

“When the woman approached us for assistance for her husband, our doctors noticed that she was already due for delivery and immediately rushed her to the hospital where she later gave birth through a successful cesarean section,” the governor said.

He added that the state government had reached an understanding with the hospital management to offset the couple’s medical bills as well as those of other patients encountered during the visit.

“We have agreed with the hospital management to pay the bills of the couple and several other patients we met in the wards so they will not have any reason to worry about payment and their treatment can continue without interruption. By the grace of God, we believe the man and others receiving treatment will recover speedily,” he added.

The governor noted that the gesture forms part of his administration’s commitment to supporting residents of Edo State, particularly those facing medical emergencies and financial hardship.

Patients and relatives who benefited from the intervention expressed appreciation to the governor for the timely support, describing the gesture as a huge relief amid the burden of rising hospital bills.
