The Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, has called for stronger commitment and practical actions toward advancing the rights, dignity, and opportunities of women and girls as the world commemorates the 2026 International Women’s Day.

In a message to mark the occasion, the commissioner joined the global community in celebrating the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of women and girls across Edo State, Nigeria, and the world.

She noted that the theme for this year’s celebration, “Rights, Justice, and Action for All Women and Girls,” affirms the urgent need for governments, institutions, communities, and individuals to move beyond rhetoric and take meaningful steps that guarantee equal opportunities, protection, and justice for women and girls.

Abdallah reaffirmed the commitment of the Edo State Government to policies and programmes that empower women socially, economically, and politically.

She explained that under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, the state government remains focused on strengthening initiatives that promote gender equality, protect vulnerable groups, support survivors of gender-based violence, and expand opportunities for women to thrive.

According to her, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the government continues to implement programmes designed to enhance the wellbeing of women while ensuring that their voices and contributions remain central to the state’s development agenda.

The commissioner described International Women’s Day as not only a moment of celebration but also a call to action, stressing that empowering women leads to stronger families, prosperous communities, and progressive societies.

She therefore called on development partners, civil society organisations, the private sector, traditional and religious institutions, and young people to collaborate with government in promoting the rights, protection, and dignity of every woman and girl.

She applauded the women and girls of Edo State for their courage, creativity, and leadership role, noting that their contributions continue to inspire positive change across communities.

The commissioner concluded by urging all stakeholders to continue working together to create a society where every woman and girl can live with dignity, equality, and opportunity.
