In a decisive step to address the growing concern of mentally unstable individuals roaming public spaces, the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has officially launched a statewide intervention aimed at identifying, evacuating, and rehabilitating affected persons.
The exercise was flagged off by the Commissioner, Mrs Eugenia Abdallah, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring dignity to vulnerable citizens while enhancing public safety across the state.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner emphasized that the initiative goes beyond a routine cleanup operation, describing it as a humane and structured response designed to provide care, shelter, and long term rehabilitation for individuals in need of mental health support. She assured that the exercise would be conducted with full respect for human rights and in accordance with established social welfare standards.

Abdallah further disclosed that the operation is not a one-off exercise but part of a sustained strategy. According to her, the Ministry will carry out periodic interventions across the state to reduce the presence of mentally unstable persons on the streets, while ensuring they receive appropriate treatment and support services.
She was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Joy Ihensekhien, alongside officials of the Rehabilitation Department, who are responsible for coordinating the exercise and ensuring that those rescued are properly assessed, treated, and, where possible, reintegrated into society.

Also speaking, the Director of Rehabilitation, Mr Sylvester Okoeguale, described the initiative as a critical component of the government’s broader response to homelessness and mental health challenges in Edo State. He noted that many individuals found on the streets require urgent medical attention and structured support systems, which the government is fully prepared to provide.
He added that the intervention would be implemented in phases across the three senatorial districts to ensure thorough coverage and effective execution.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations and called on residents to support the initiative by reporting cases and cooperating with officials throughout the exercise.
