The Edo State Security Squad has directed business owners across the state to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at their premises as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security and curb crime.

The directive was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, following a briefing by the spokesperson of the Edo State Security Squad, Noah Idemudia, in Benin City on Monday. According to the statement, business owners have until July 30, 2026, to install functional CCTV systems capable of supporting security operations across the state.

Idemudia said CCTV cameras would significantly assist security agencies in investigating criminal activities, identifying suspects and gathering critical evidence for prosecution. “Business owners are encouraged to install effective, working cameras within their business premises. We appeal to the general public and the business community to comply for everyone’s safety,” he said.

With your cameras, we can piece together certain things as professionals. Please comply with us to make Edo a safe place.”

The Security Squad spokesperson also issued a stern warning against any planned “7/7” celebrations reportedly being organised by cult groups, stressing that security agencies had already put measures in place to arrest and prosecute anyone found participating in such activities.
We are already taking action. You cannot carry out such acts in Benin City. Even if you go outside Benin, you will still be apprehended. So there is no point,” he said.

“If you already have the intention of celebrating, please cancel it now, because when you are arrested, you will be prosecuted accordingly.”
Idemudia further reiterated the need to properly identify and profile recognised community leaders across Edo State in collaboration with the Oba of Benin Palace. He warned individuals falsely presenting themselves as community leaders to desist immediately, noting that anyone found impersonating recognised leaders would face the full weight of the law.

He also disclosed that the Edo State Security Squad recently arrested two suspected criminals in Auchi and Uromi over alleged cultism and unlawful possession of firearms.
According to him, the suspects will be arraigned before the mobile court established by the Edo State Government to expedite the prosecution of persons accused of cult-related offences and kidnapping.
