The Edo State House of Assembly has witnessed a major leadership shake-up with the emergence of Hon. Yekini Idaiyi, representing Akoko-Edo II Constituency, as the new Speaker.

Idaiyi was sworn-in following the resignation of Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, whose tenure as Speaker began in 2023.

The leadership changes also saw the resignation of the Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Ibhamawu, following pressure from members of the House. Both Agbebaku and Ibhamawu were subsequently suspended indefinitely during a brief plenary session that lasted less than 30 minutes.

The Assembly thereafter reconstituted its principal officers, electing Hon. Ojiezele Osezua Sunday, representing Esan South-East Constituency, as Majority Leader, while Hon. Inegbeboh Ojie Eugene of Igueben Constituency emerged as Deputy Majority Leader.

Hon. Natasha Osawaru Irobosa, representing Egor Constituency on the platform of the NDC, was also elected Minority Leader.

Agbebaku, before becoming Speaker, had served as Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the 7th Assembly, Hon. Marcus Onobun. He previously represented Owan West Constituency in the House from 2007 to 2011 before returning in 2023.

The latest developments mark a significant realignment within the 8th Edo State House of Assembly, with a new leadership team now set to steer the affairs of the legislature.
