The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development is appealing to members of the public to assist in tracing the family, relatives, friends, former colleagues and former students of 89-year-old Madam Mariana Darwang, who is currently under the care and protection of the Ministry.
Madam Darwang has been in the custody of the Ministry since September 6, 2026, following her referral by the Edo State Ministry of Health.
Prior to her referral, Madam Darwang had approached the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, seeking assistance with mobility. In response, the Edo State Government, through the Ministry of Health, provided her with a wheelchair and crutches to aid her movement and promote her wellbeing, dignity and independence as an older person.
According to Madam Darwang, she was formerly a teacher at Immaculate Conception College (ICC), Benin City, where she taught Literature in English between 1984 and 1986.
She is a native of Edo State and has disclosed that she currently has no known family member with whom she is in contact.
The Ministry is therefore calling on former students of ICC, former colleagues, friends, neighbours, relatives and anyone who may have known Madam Darwang to come forward with any information that could help trace her family or reconnect her with people from her past.
Anyone with useful information concerning Madam Mariana Darwang or her family is kindly requested to contact the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Secretariat Complex, Block C, Ground Floor, along Sapele Road, Benin City, Edo State.
A simple piece of information could make a life changing difference by helping an elderly former teacher reconnect with her family, former students, friends and loved ones.
