Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has received the Christian Icon Award from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in recognition of his commitment to public service, ethical leadership and Christian values in governance.

The governor received the award on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, as part of activities marking CAN’s 50th anniversary celebration, also known as its Golden Jubilee.

CAN President, Most Rev. (Dr.) Daniel C. Okoh, alongside the co-chairmen of the anniversary planning committee, Boss Mustapha, CFR, and Archbishop Michael Akinwale, said the award recognised Okpebholo’s contributions to public service and his impact on the Christian community in Nigeria.

They noted that his commitment to compassionate leadership and the promotion of Christian values in governance had continued to inspire people across the country.

The organisers explained that the award was designed to recognise leaders who demonstrate excellence, integrity and a commitment to nation-building while upholding the principles of faith and service in the discharge of their political responsibilities.

Reacting to the honour, Governor Okpebholo expressed gratitude to CAN, describing the recognition as both humbling and motivating.

“I am humbled by this recognition from CAN. It is a reminder that leadership is service, and it pushes me to do more for the people of Edo State and for Nigeria,” the governor said.

Since assuming office on November 12, 2024, Okpebholo has anchored his administration on the SHINE Agenda, which prioritises security, healthcare, infrastructure, natural resources, agriculture and education.

Founded in 1976, the Christian Association of Nigeria is the umbrella body of Christian denominations in the country. As it marks its 50th anniversary, the association is reflecting on its contributions to the Christian community and national development.
