The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, has challenged medical students to look beyond traditional clinical practice and embrace innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration and opportunities to make meaningful contributions to society.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu gave the charge on Friday at the 2026 South-South Convention of the Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NIMSA), themed “Rooted, but not Restricted: The Making of Physicians Beyond Boundaries.”
Represented by the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC), Training and Monitoring, Prof. Anthony Atimati, the UBTH CMD urged future physicians to cultivate the knowledge, skills and vision needed to drive transformative developments in healthcare and other sectors of society.
She emphasised that while a strong foundation in medical science, unwavering professional ethics and compassionate patient care remain essential to medical practice, physicians must also be willing to explore new frontiers and adapt to emerging opportunities.
According to her, the future of medicine requires professionals who can combine clinical expertise with innovation, critical thinking and interdisciplinary knowledge to address evolving healthcare challenges and contribute to broader societal development.
The CMD’s message aligned with the convention’s theme, which encourages aspiring physicians to remain grounded in the core values of medicine while exploring opportunities beyond conventional professional boundaries.
The convention was held at the Main Auditorium of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), bringing the theme of professional growth and broader opportunities for future medical practitioners to the forefront.
The Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NIMSA) is the student arm of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
