The President of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists (NAO), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, on Friday joined the global community in commemorating the 2026 World Orthodontic Health Day, calling on Nigerians to prioritize proper oral healthcare and avoid seeking treatment from unqualified practitioners.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu noted that orthodontists play a vital role in improving not only dental appearance but also the confidence, personality and overall wellbeing of individuals through corrective dental care.

Speaking during activities marking the annual event, she emphasized the importance of regular dental check-ups and warned against patronizing quacks, stressing that only trained professionals should handle orthodontic treatments.

The NAO President, who is also the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), described World Orthodontic Health Day as a global platform that brings together orthodontists, patients and the public to promote awareness on proper teeth alignment and oral health.

According to her, the annual event, observed every May 15, is organized by the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO) to celebrate the transformative impact of orthodontic treatment on people’s lives.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu added that UBTH, alongside other teaching hospitals across the country, is commemorating the day to further educate Nigerians on how orthodontic care can enhance wellbeing, boost self-confidence and improve overall quality of life.
