OSN Celebrates NMA President-Elect, Prof. Omoti, for Landmark Victory

The Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria (OSN), Edo State Chapter, on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, hosted a reception in honour of the newly elected President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Afekhide Ernest Omoti.

The event, held at the MDCAN Lounge in Benin City, was led by the Chairman of the Society, Prof. Rita Momoh, and attracted eminent medical practitioners, academics, and healthcare administrators.

In her remarks, Prof. Momoh described Prof. Omoti as an exemplary leader whose dedication, integrity, and commitment to quality healthcare delivery have earned him widespread respect within the medical profession.

She said the reception was organised to celebrate one of the society’s distinguished members, noting that Prof. Omoti’s emergence as NMA President was a source of pride not only to the ophthalmology community but also to Edo State and the nation at large.

“Today, we celebrate a seasoned clinician, accomplished researcher, administrator, and a worthy ambassador of the ophthalmology profession,” she stated.

Responding, Prof. Omoti, who attended the event alongside his wife, Prof. Caroline Omoti, expressed profound appreciation to members of the OSN and the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), for their unwavering support throughout his campaign.

He acknowledged that their confidence in his leadership abilities played a significant role in his successful emergence as President of the NMA.

Prior to his election, Prof. Omoti served as Chairman of the Edo State Branch of the NMA and Chairman of the National Eye Health Committee. He is also a distinguished Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) and Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

Among the dignitaries present were the Chief Medical Advisory Committee Chairman of UBTH, Dr. Emmanuel Osaigbovo, who represented the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, Dr. Philip Osho, Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (Clinical Services), Prof. Adebola Ehizele, Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (Research and Ethics), Chairman of Edo NMA, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, Chairman of MDCAN UBTH, Dr. Benson Okwara, and Dr. Leonard Atsikidi, former Secretary of Edo NMA.

Others in attendance included Dr. (Mrs.) Tina Ideh, Managing Director of Prime Optical, Prof. Valentina Okeigbeme, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, UBTH, Prof. Adesuwa Osahon, Dr. Jeremiah Iguma, Secretary of MDCAN UBTH, Prof. Catherine Ukponmwan, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Waziri Erameh, Prof. Vivian OsagieNMA, Prof. Omolade Awodu, Dr. Emmanuel Ighodaro, former Chairman of Edo NMA, Dr. Lucy Eriba, Vice Chairman of MDCAN UBTH, Dr. Emeka Okoh, Dr. Bodeno Ehis, and Dr. Osayem Otabor-Olubor, among others.

Prof. Omoti was elected President of the Nigerian Medical Association during the Association’s Annual General Congress and Delegates Meeting held in Kano on May 2, 2026. He is expected to lead the country’s foremost medical body for the next two years.
