The Senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District, Senator Joseph Ikpea, has called on Nigerians to embrace peace, unity, and patriotism as the nation marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
In a Democracy Day message made available to journalists in Benin City, Ikpea urged citizens to support ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and state governments to address the country’s security challenges.
The senator particularly appealed to residents of Edo Central Senatorial District to take ownership of security in their communities by complementing government initiatives through vigilance and the timely reporting of suspicious activities.
Ikpea paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, widely regarded as the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, whose struggle and sacrifice became a defining symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Reflecting on the significance of Democracy Day, the lawmaker noted that the nation’s democratic gains were achieved through the sacrifices of heroes and heroines who fought tirelessly for justice, freedom, and good governance.
Speaking on the 2027 general elections, Ikpea stressed the need to consolidate on the people-oriented programmes and developmental strides of Governor Monday Okpebholo, who previously represented Edo Central in the Senate before becoming governor.
“Today is a day that occupies a special place in the democratic history of Nigeria. We must work together to sustain the democracy that people like Chief MKO Abiola, his late wife Kudirat, and many other patriots paid the ultimate price for. Several others suffered untold hardships and permanent disabilities in the struggle for democratic rule,” he said.
“Nigeria is passing through challenging times, particularly in the area of security. However, it is evident that the Federal Government and the Edo State Government under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo are making significant efforts to tackle insecurity. These efforts require the support and cooperation of all citizens.”
Ikpea therefore called on Nigerians to remain committed to the ideals of democracy, national unity, and peaceful coexistence as the country continues its journey toward greater development and prosperity.
